Paid Summer Internships in MANY career fields!

Clatsop Community College’s Clatsop WORKS Program partners with local employers to provide paid professional internships to Clatsop County high school and college students ages 16 and older.

Students looking for professional work experience over the summer in a career field of interest can connect to employers from multiple local industries through one application! A Clatsop WORKS internship is more than just a summer job; it offers valuable exposure to how a business in a student’s chosen field runs, professional experience, access to a variety of tasks and departments through job shadowing, mentorship, a practical way to expand a student’s job network and professional contacts, a stronger resume, the ability to secure good references and recommendations, job experience by introducing a student to daily rigors and tasks without a firm commitment to that precise career track, and on some occasions, a transition to a permanent job.

Students can apply now for these paid professional internships. The final deadline to apply is May 15th, but employers will begin reviewing student applications on April 15th.

Clatsop WORKS is a wonderful way for students to explore career fields in the real world. An internship also offers students a chance to “try out” a job or industry to determine if it is the right choice for them before committing funds and time to pursue a particular career path. For example, one student who planned on going into healthcare ended up doing a social media internship and loved it so much, she changed her career path.

The program also includes six to eight professional development and networking sessions throughout the summer. Leaders in lumber, manufacturing, personal finance, construction, and other industries present about a variety of topics to help students develop their workforce skills.

Sometimes students are unaware of the career opportunities that are available to them in their local area. Kevin Leahy, director of the Clatsop Community College Small Business Development Center and Clatsop Economic Development Resources, says Clatsop County has many more job opportunities than when he was growing up here.

We have tourism but also forest products, fishing, medical, natural resources conservation, maritime transportation, industry & trades, marketing, finance, culinary, and more …just so many career opportunities locally!

This summer’s program is shaping up to be very exciting. More host employers are joining each day, and we already have internship opportunities for the summer in automotive technology, natural resources conservation, construction, hospitality, healthcare, marketing, real estate, veterinary, recreation, tourism, education, computer tech, social media, maintenance & public works, administrative / office, lumber mill, fire damage restoration, and law enforcement.

Our program continues to grow, and we are actively recruiting employers to create internship opportunities in their organizations to give Clatsop County students unparalleled opportunities.

Student applications are accepted now through 5 p.m. May 15. One application will connect a student to multiple businesses. The employer application deadline is April 15 and the internships are expected to run from mid-to-late June through mid-late August. For more information and to apply, visit clatsopworks.com.
